The prestigious English critic Tim Atkin has just announced that Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal 2021 was the only wine to reach 100 points in his annual Argentina Special Report 2024.

This wine comes from a specific 0.93-hectare parcel located on the west side of Finca Piedra Infinita. It showcases the most extreme facet of Paraje Altamira's soil, characterized by the presence of large deposits of stones covered with an extraordinarily rich layer of calcareous material.

Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal 2021

In his 2024 Argentina Special Report, Atkin highlights the Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal 2021 as "a world-class Malbec" characterized by its texture, firm tannins, and delightful freshness. "Entirely unwooded, it has aromas of jarilla and sweet spices and a palate of thrilling minerality, [with] a finish that lingers like a happy memory on the palate."

After his visit to Zuccardi Valle de Uco this March, Tim Atkin commented: "Of all winemakers in Argentina, Sebastián Zuccardi is arguably the person who has done the most to champion the Uco Valley’s different terroirs, seeking to express them as faithfully as possible in the bottle." Sebastián Zuccardi, Winemaking Director of Zuccardi Valle de Uco winery, has a clear conviction: the wines must reflect the place, understood as the combination of landscape, climate, soil, topography, history, culture, vintage, and people. "As producers, we seek transparency," he says. In his opinion, "The key is to have a great place. Then, we need to know it deeply to be able to interpret it. Third, we need a precise execution in the winery."

In Sebastián's words, "When making this wine, I like to think that it comes from a said place – 'lieu dit.' Those of us who work daily in this vineyard know that it has special places, with truly unique characteristics." Regarding the 2021 harvest, Sebastián remembers it as "wonderful from an oenological perspective, characterized by the arrival of the grapes with great freshness and vibrancy, typical of a cool, humid, and sunny vintage. Thanks to these conditions, we achieved wines with identity, capable of showing with great transparency our interpretation of the year and the place from which they come."

Tim Atkin is a Master of Wine and wine journalist from England with more than 30 years in the industry. Considered one of the most prominent wine critics internationally, he writes for publications such as The World of Fine Wine, Intelligent Life, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Imbibe, Decanter, Wine-Searcher, Fine Drink (China), and Woman and Home, among others. He is also the co-chair of the International Wine Challenge, one of the most rigorous blind tasting competitions in the world.

The distinction was awarded to Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal 2021.

This wine is the result of the search for the purest expression of identity from Finca Piedra Infinita, in Paraje Altamira. It comes from a specific parcel of 0.93 hectares, located in the western sector of this vineyard, known for its shallow soils with enormous deposits of alluvial stones covered by a rich layer of calcareous material.

Descorchados is currently the most important reference for South American wines. Created and edited by the renowned Chilean wine critic and journalist Patricio Tapia, it published its first edition 26 years ago. It includes a deep analysis of the wine scene on this side of the world, leading to an annual report that includes the best wines from South America, trends, and the key producers to know. In addition, it focuses on new regions, new grape varieties, and wine styles, an indispensable guide to what is happening today in the main wine-producing regions of Latin America.

In his upcoming report, Patricio Tapia dedicates a special introduction to the two wines that have reached 100 points for the first time in Descorchados – both from Argentina: Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal 2021 and Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae 2021. “We have closely watched the evolution of how Sebastián Zuccardi and Alejandro Vigil approach the task of expressing in the wine the vineyard from which these superlative reds were born (…) This year has brought a brilliant moment for both producers in the interpretation of a place, coinciding with a stellar harvest like 2021, a fresh year that has proven to be the best engine for these wines to express their origin. What we have is the crystallization of the serious and meticulous work of two of the best producers today in South America.”

In the words of Sebastián Zuccardi, Winemaking Director of Zuccardi Valle de Uco, “those of us who work daily in this vineyard know its special characteristics, which make it unique. From an winegrowing point of view, the 2021 harvest was wonderful due to the great freshness and vibrancy of the grapes, typical of a cool, humid, and luminous harvest. Thanks to these conditions, when we finished the harvest, we had the feeling that it was going to bring us great satisfaction.”

In addition to Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal 2021, which achieved a perfect score, several other wines from Zuccardi Valle de Uco received excellent ratings:

Finca Canal Uco, 99 points
Finca Las Cerrilladas, 99 points
Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal 2021, 98 points
Aluvional Paraje Altamira, 98 points

Coming here is a source of inspiration."

This grand gathering of regional cuisine and wines took place at the Piedra Infinita Cocina restaurant of Zuccardi Valle de Uco, the winery awarded as the World´s Best Vineyard in 2019, 2020 and 2021, and incorporated into the competition´s Hall of Fame in 2022.

Micha, leads Maido restaurant, a result of his passion for Nikkei cuisine, which is inspired by his home country, its landscapes, ingredients, and ingenuity, drawing from his childhood memories and new experiences. As part of the 2023 edition of his Argentina Special Report, renowned British wine critic Tim Atkin has chosen Director of Familia Zuccardi, José Alberto Zuccardi, as the Legend of the Year, thus highlighting his extensive and inspiring career.

Tim Atkin is a Master of Wine and an English wine journalist with over 30 years of experience. Considered one of the most prominent wine critics internationally, his annual report on Argentine viticulture is one of the most highly anticipated publications of the year for buyers and consumers of Argentine wine worldwide. In addition to rating the best wines of the year, he highlights leaders who have had great influence on the industry’s development.

“The history of the modern Argentine wine industry is in many ways the history of Zuccardi”, Tim Atkin affirmed. He also highlighted that “Zuccardi has been a guiding light of quality” for the country´s wine industry.

In his announcement, broadcasted live on social media, Tim Atkin dedicated this honor to José Alberto: “The quality of the wines that you as a family are making have never been better, and they´re some of the great wines – not just of South America – but the world. A lot of that is down to you and to your vision.”

After his father founded the family winery in 1963, José Alberto began working with the winery in 1976, and since then, he has expanded it to become a benchmark not only in his country but also internationally, producing several of the finest wines of the southern hemisphere, inspired by his son Sebastián, whose mission is to cultivate wines that express the diverse terroirs of the Uco Valley.

Together with his children Julia and Miguel, José Alberto has successfully expanded the family winery by developing its tourism business and producing extra virgin olive oils that have gained international recognition.

José Alberto reflected on working together as a family: “I love that we can work long-term as a family-owned company. I´ve become part of my children´s projects and part of this new era for Argentina, where I think we are proving that Argentina is a world-class region in the world and with a lot of potential for the future. It may take one generation or two generations, but I think the best is coming.”

As an enthusiastic advocate for the potential of his country to produce world-class wines, José Alberto Zuccardi is one of the leading figures in the Argentine wine industry.
